French Horn Players Lose Hearing Faster

A study by the American Industrial Hygiene Association has found that noise induced hearing loss - a permanent yet preventable form of hearing loss that results from exposure to high-intensity sound over long periods of time - is highest among french horn players.

The study found that 82% of horn players reported that they don't use hearing protection, and even those that did used it infrequently or used inadequate forms of protection. According to lead researcher Ian O'Brien:
"Even mild hearing loss can result in difficulties discriminating pitch, abnormal loudness growth and tinnitus, all of which can affect a musician’s ability to perform, subsequently jeopardizing his or her livelihood."
